Browsing more safely

Someone with access to your phone or computer may be able to see the pages you visit. These steps may help reduce the risk.

Quick exit

The “Quick exit” button at the top of each page replaces this website with another page. Pressing Esc twice in quick succession does the same. This does not clear your browsing history.

Private browsing

Private or incognito browsing limits the history saved by your browser after all private windows are closed. It does not hide activity from monitoring software, your network or internet provider.

  • Chrome and Edge: Ctrl + Shift + N (Mac: Command + Shift + N)
  • Firefox and Safari: Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P (Mac: Command + Shift + P). Safari on Mac: Command + Shift + N
  • On a phone: Choose “New incognito tab” or “Private” in your browser.

Managing browsing history

If you did not use private browsing, consider whether removing relevant history entries would be safe. Suddenly clearing all history may attract attention if it is normally full. Removing selected entries may be less noticeable, but cannot remove every trace of activity.

Phones and accounts

  • Check who has access to your Google or Apple account and review location sharing when it is safe to do so.
  • To contact us, use an email account that only you can access and that is not signed in on a shared household device.
  • Be alert to apps you did not install, particularly parental-control or phone-finding apps.
  • If you think your phone is monitored, consider using a safer device, such as a trusted friend’s phone, for sensitive communication.
